Frequently Asked Questions

What are autoflowering cannabis seeds?

Autoflowering seeds produce plants that switch from vegetative growth to flowering automatically based on age, rather than needing a change in light cycle. This trait comes from Cannabis ruderalis, a hardy subspecies that evolved in short-summer climates.

How are autoflowering seeds different from photoperiod seeds?

Photoperiod strains need a light schedule change (typically from 18/6 to 12/12) to trigger flowering, while autoflowers begin flowering on their own after roughly 2-4 weeks regardless of light exposure. Autoflowers are generally smaller, faster, and less demanding to manage.

Do I need to change the light schedule to make autoflowers flower?

No. Autoflowers flower on an internal timer no matter what light schedule they're given, so growers can keep them under 18-20 hours of light per day for the entire life cycle to maximize growth and yield.

How long does an autoflower grow cycle take from seed to harvest?

Most autoflowering strains are ready to harvest in about 8-10 weeks from germination, with some fast varieties finishing in as little as 7-8 weeks.

Are autoflowering seeds good for beginners?

Yes, autoflowers are widely recommended for beginners because they don't require light-cycle management, tend to be compact and forgiving, and finish quickly, so mistakes cost less time.

Can you get multiple harvests per season with autoflowers?

Yes. Because autoflowers aren't tied to seasonal daylight changes, you can plant new seeds every few weeks (as long as there's no frost) and stagger multiple harvests within a single outdoor growing season.

Can autoflowers handle training techniques like topping or heavy pruning?

Autoflowers have a short, fixed life cycle and can't revert to vegetative growth to recover from stress, so heavy techniques like topping or severe pruning can cost growing days and reduce yield. Low-stress training is the preferred method.

Do autoflowering seeds come in feminized versions?

Most commercial autoflower seeds are bred as feminized autoflowers, combining the automatic flowering trait with a near-100% chance of female, bud-producing plants.
